KLM uses Facebook for social media luggage tag promo

Simple and fun idea from KLM – fresh from the more arduous task of running test flights into the volcanic ash cloud earlier this week – with a clever use of Facebook.

The Dutch airline has developed a system on its Facebook page where users can design and obtain free luggage tags, using their own pictures (gallery and upload) or other glamorous and travel-related photo stock in the system.

The tags include the owner’s name and address as well as a fields for free text, such as flight number, etc.  KLM sends the tags to any address around the world.

Sounds possibly a bit dull and pointless to some, but not to the 7,284 that have already grabbed themselves a free set of tags from KLM.

The social element of the scheme comes from KLM displaying the tags of every other user that has created one through the system, as well as injecting some exclusivity into the promotion by counting down how many are still available.

Obviously there are probably more innovative methods but the idea suits the Facebook style and has been popular within its profile group of 32,000-odd members.

Meanwhile, KLM was one of a few airlines to use Facebook to distribute important messages during the volcanic ash crisis in Europe.

Users were able to ask questions about the status of flights as well as see a video message from the airline’s CEO Peter Hartman.

Wasn’t this a solution introduced by a company at a recent PhoCusWright Travel Innovation Summit? Remember one presentation on this topic.

    I don’t get it?
