Kudos to Bluemoon for putting together this astonishing map of the world illustrating the location of pictures taken by internet users.
The image was created by tracking every picture uploaded to the Google-owned image site, Panoramio, and plotting the volume of images in each location.
Bluemoon says:
“Yellow indicates high touristiness, red medium touristiness, and blue low touristiness. Areas having no Panoramio photos at all are grey. The analysis takes into account how many photos and by how many authors there are in a given area.”
There are a number of ways to view the data, either on a Google Map or as a patch layer on Google Earth.

- South East Asia – illustrates popularity of Thai islands, Bangkok, Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) and southern Vietnam.
- Australia and New Zealand – mainly coastal in Australia, apart from Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the centre of the county.
- North America – West and East coasts dominate, with pockets around Chicago, Florida and the Rockies.
