Emerging amongst the tech world’s predictable excitement over the Apple iPhone software upgrade are various rumours of problems for travel users.
In particular the new system, known as iOS 4, is understood to be causing problems for apps with mapping functionality.
Apple has not officially acknowledged the problem but a number of message boards have highlighted issues with the new OS in recent weeks [one here] and some developers are trying to find workarounds ahead of a wider bug fix from Apple.
The problem for travel app providers is that the iOS 4 went live as an upgrade to existing iPhone users this week and many are now discovering a number of travel apps are not working.
A number of app providers have privately to having problems this week and are keen to a resolution quickly.
One particular problem is with apps that use mapping systems outside of the usual Google Maps portfolio, known as “packed maps” from a number of library providers.
Any app providers out there with experiences to share?

Currently, google maps is not working on iPhone 4. Maybe it goes live for new device on the 24th?
Is it working now?
The maps application is not working after I upgraded my 3GS to os4. It was fine before and now is a mess.
Yes, it appears that the iOS4 upgrade has broken many of the location based apps. My company Point Inside has created a fix and has submitted it to the Apple App Store for immediate approval in an effort to ensure optimal user experience across iOS3 and iOS4 devices.
Feedback is welcome.

The “Mail” icon does not work well now. It used to be quick and easy to view and check my emails, now it seems like the screen does not update. I wish I had not gone with the upgrade. If anyone is reading this, DO NOT upgrade your iPhone 3G s for iOS4. Otherwise, good luck.
I depend on the map function within my google calendar for business to get me to my appointments. With iOS3, I could easily get directions by finding my location automatically. Now it’s not even an option. This is very frustrating.
I’m finding lots of my apps do not work with iOS4. Bhuvnaesh is right do NOT upgrade iphone 3GS for IOS4. What a pain!
Just got my iPhone 4 yesterday and maps was working fine and today it’s not working at all. It won’t find locations at all…. Anyone know what’s going on?
After 4.0 upgrade from 3GS, cannot get my mail to work like it use to. Mail will no longer fetch automatically. All settings are correct.
Just noticed my Maps app is broken, too, after the upgrade. Anyone know of a way to revert to the old OS?
My capital radio app will not open, so I deleted it and wanted to re install it….it isn’t even on the app search anymore. Very frustrating. If I knew this, I wouldnt have upgraded.
I updated my 3GS to ios4, with the result that the location finder of the Apple-provided Map application — the most important to me — no longer usably works. The GPS locator jumps around unpredictably and is often one or two miles off.
My question: HOW DO I UNINSTALL IOS4 AND REVERT TO MY PREVIOUS OS?
i have the same problem!
Postscript:
Whatever was Apple thinking when it released ios4 to 3GS users? Have the Apple folk ever met the phrase “regression testing”?
it’s very frustrating…
maps doesn’t work for me neither, i just upgraded my 3gs :-/
anyone got news??
Lots of my apps (on a 3GS) are totally useless since the upgrade to ios 4. Most wierd of all – the iPod app doesn’t work. Well done Apple…
I was lost when travelling up north, so I got out my “Trusty” iPhone, selected the Maps App and said “We cannot find driving instructions between these two places” at first I thought a glitch, turned phone on and off, and still same problem. Thankfully I’m home now, no thanks to apple!!!!
driving with friends and was trying to use my maps app to find directions – it’ll let me search a location but won’t give me directions. had to use safari… thanks for the update.

I just goy an iPhone and my map app stopped working. Can you tell me if there is a fix?
This don’t even work with the simulator on xcode. Even though there is example code ‘locateme’ supposedly updated for ios4. So sad now : (
if you go to the google website, you can still use maps and get directions that way (worked for me on a drive from Denver to Fort Worth).
