American Airlines wants to get out front of a tragedy involving some puppies.
The airline used its AAirwaves Twitter account to tweet today that it is investigating the deaths of seven puppies which took one of its flights yesterday.
Here’s the tweet:
Seven puppies — among 14 on board American Flight 851 Tuesday from Tulsa, Okla., to Chicago — died, according to NBC Chicago. Five of the puppies were said to have died on board and two later, Â the story says.
American also tweeted that teams are actively investigating to find out what happened.

Dear AA Pet Cargo. We as animal shippers are very concerned about the animals during the heat and cold weather conditions throughout the year. Continential Airlines has a Van that drives up to pick up the pets from the plane and transport them into the airport pickup area, which has air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter, and eliminating the dangers of the animals dying from being put on in the weather to transport in and out. It is a Simple cure for the safety of the animals, and with so many of us shipping pets with you on a regular basis all year long, it would be a very responsible service we would like you to provide.
Now with these pups dying on that flight, we just know that every Animal Activist in the Country is going to jump on this and try to stop the flights of animals, and or try to pass such ridiculous regulations that is will affect both the shippers and the Airlines in an adverse way. Just a Few simple changes would make all the difference, and help to satisfy the Pubic’s general concern on having their pets shipped to them. I always get bad feedback from a percentage of potential buyers about their Fears of having the puppies flown in. I try to ease their fears, but now with this News Story about the Puppies dying, WE ALL need to do something Fast, and Especially the Airlines. I hope whoever gets this e-mail has some Authority and Common Sense to take this to your board and discuss it, and make a decision promptly. You should definitely give an Interview with a NEW PLAN in action so that you don’t get Beat Down over this situation. Suggestions would be to Change the Name of your Flight Program to something like “American Airline’s New PRIORITY PET SAFE Flights” and follow through with the NEW Program information which should include something like “American Airlines Great Dedication to the Wonderful World of Pets have taken New Steps in Securing their Health and Best Welfare on our New Priority Pet Safe Flight Program. #1. Personalized Air Conditioned and Heated Van Transport to and from Planes. #2. Pet attendants on duty during and between flights to be sure pets have food and water, and clean and dry. ETC……. Even if you charged an addition $10-$20 per pet which would add up to quite abit of additional profit, in order to hire a driver and pet attendant, People would be more than willing to pay this extra fee to ensure their pets are being well cared for and safe. Besides that, you will have Much more shipping during the hot and cold months as there would be no need for temperature restrictions and canceled flights. With all the Pets shipping across the country everyday, I am sure any airline would loss a great deal of money if the Animal Activists and general Public Stop Flying in their pets just for the fear and concern that it is Unsafe. American Airlines spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan statements sound more like she is trying to cover up a problem by stating that 2 died after going to the Vet and there is an investigation as to Why. NO, Don’t do that. It sounds like you are looking to place blame elsewhere and People are Not Stupid! They can see that, and then they will just become Untrusting of you. Admit there was a problem, and then Give the World your Solution to solving the problems with your immediate attention to this matter, so it has a Minor Chance of ever happening again. That is how to gain the Pubic’s Trust. I am a very small time in home breeder for 39 years now, with less than 20 dogs, so I am not writing you because it will affect me very much, but it Will affect You and the entire Pet adoptions across the country. Just today alone, I have already heard the “Puppy Deaths Story” from my Vet, friends and relatives, so it is Flying like wildfire already. American Airlines has been and still is the premier puppy transportation company in th United State. I do not understand how this could have taken place. However, the reason will be found in one of these areas.
1. Mechanical failure of air handling systems. (Unlikely)
2. It is unlikely all of these puppies came from the same shipper. So pre existing health conditions.. (Unlikely) All have been examined by a vet prior to being approved for transport.
3. Sabotage, by “Animal Right Nut” cases highly probable. Pending legislation in several Midwestern states against breeders, has caused the focus to change. This act of Domestic Terrorism is just a taste of how ruthless these people are.
Joe: I’m not pointing any fingers. I would like to see the results of the investigation.
The other dogs on this shipment were not from the same breeder as the one who died. I know one of the small hometown breeder who shipped a tiny 2 pound dog on this same flight. Her dog did fine. These dogs were two to a kennel, in too small a crate, and all came from the same breeder who had traveled some distance in the heat prior to shipping. Look at the breeder not at the airlines.
