Time travel technology found on old Charlie Chaplin film

Today’s coffee break fodder. Another YouTube storm around this clip, uncovering what is apparently an extra in a Charlie Chaplin film from the 1920s carrying a mobile phone.

The footage was found on the DVD extras section of the 1928 film The Circus.

A woman man (or perhaps a man in drag!) speaking into a shoe? Or evidence of time travel?

Either way, it’s pretty freaky…

UPDATE: Apparently this might be the answer, a 1920s handheld hearing aid.

Sarah Jane Smith is trying to locate the Doctor. He dropped her off in the wrong location again…

    Vooorp…Vooorp…Vooorp…Vooorp…

@wing tip – always thought Doctor Who was over-rated ;)

I like most science fiction.. but I have soft spot for that blue box. At least the new stuff is fast paced.

Now I want to buy an owl and name him Dr. Who…

    • John332 says:

Facts: Her walking method indicates an overweight older person around the age of 60. Her feet are abnormally large. She is speaking into some sort of devise and says the word “God” when facing the camera (I can read lips). The devise is irregularly shaped hence her expanded finger grasp. Hearing devise were available back then by Siemans Company but here quite expensive. From her clothing she appears not too be poor. Meaning, she could probably afford such a devise. What is strange is her coat. Why is this woman wearing such a heavy woolen garment during the Summer in California? That is when Chaplins “Circus” was released. She could also be a schizophrenic and talking into something else.

      • Terra says:

‘The Circus’ was premiere in January in L.A., the coat is appropriate attire and others in the same scenes are also wearing warm clothing. The rest of your observations are very good.

If I had time traveling capabilities I would not want to go back to the year 1928 and have a cameo walk on during a Charlie Chaplin film. What I would do in the year 1928 is probably go to Atlantic City and hook up w/ flappers and take advantage of the great discounts and prices back in that era. You cant beat a 10 cent coffee & cheese cake combo!

  3. Peter Turner says:

If it was a mobile phone, then who would she be talking to?

  4. Tiffany says:

In 1921 the detroit police had one way radios in the squad cars.. by the 1940′s they had backpack battery powered walkie talkies in World War ll… they might have been testing different models and the distances they could go before it didn’t send a signal anymore…

  5. Tiffany says:

it does look like he is wearing a bag on the right side..

  6. ian says:

also the hearing aid thing is not likely. the person is clearly talking with no one around, crazy

  7. Laura says:

Get real! It was a Chaplin Film, for goodness sake not a documentary or live man-on-the-street shots. It was an old fashioned phone with the wires cut off. In a Chaplin Film about the Circus! It is sooooo Chaplin! He was known for putting all manner of craziness in his films. Don’t make a big thing of it.

  8. Texasjim says:

well the video looks good , but if she is , she is just strooling down a street , no-one would notice, an dmaybe she is talking to another traveler, like getting good deals on black dreeses and crappy shoes, back then the show sizes were only 4 sizes

  9. Texasjim says:

ok maybe its a hand held hearing aid its about the same size of a large cell phone,, maybe

  10. Barry says:

It could be a music box.

  11. Good job they built all those mobile phone masts in the 1920s so that she could actually use the thing…

  12. Wayne Paul says:

Save these important clips, and similar ones, for this fail proof test. If the time traveler Disappears, or if new ones appear Suddenly – then we may have a time traveler!

  13. Hero Nakamura says:

If she has the tech to travel in time, her phone could also emit through time. She could be even talking to herself in the future and probably using the very same device. But enough bullshit, she is most likely an alien.

  14. alice says:

Well i believe it is either a audiphone or she is scratching her hear, think about it, put your hand up to your hear like you are scratching behind it (but at a certain angle), it looks the same as if you are holding a phone, plus it was dark and that thing that looked like a phone pretty much looks like a shadow to me, it was obvious she was with the man as he stopped and she would lag behind if she was getting the audiphone to work OR if she was bitching about her ear… think about it logically people, not everyone can be stupid and believe in aliens and time travel. I’m 17 and i’m not that stupid… i worry about the future of this world… plus who could she possible be talking to, she wouldn’t be able to get a signal out of it, dah

i always thought that time travel was posible and by the looks of it it is posible

  18. CN says:

An old relative of mine had one of the hearing aids by the Siemens Company.: http://www.hearingaidmuseum.com/gallery/Carbon/Siemens/index-siemens.htm
It was about the size of a transistor radio – sound from the microphone was transmitted to an ear piece in the ear – built in ear pieces came MUCH later. A person did NOT hold them to the ear, and, talk
