How airlines use Twitter – June 2011 [infographic]

Southwest Airlines moves into second place as the global carrier with the most mentions, according to the latest report ranking activity by airlines on Twitter.

The US-based low cost carrier was mentioned in close to 12,000 tweets during June 2011, but still lags way behind rival Delta which had almost 21,000 mentions.

AirAsia hangs behind in third place with 11,000 mentions.

Good stats but let’s not forget why Delta sends so many tweets…

They’re the only ones with real customer service reps on there 24 / 7 to specifically handle flight issues. It’s great.

Justin: Another factor to consider about the airlines — Delta and others — and their volume of incoming tweets is that not all incoming tweets are positive in nature. Far from it.

So, just because you are receiving lots of tweets doesn’t make you special.

I would bet that United Airlines was mentioned in or received a lot of tweets when they broke the guy’s guitar.

Still, it’s a metric worth knowing about.

It would be nice to know what the re-tweeting rate is of the airlines. It is probably one of the best metrics for demonstrating how interesting the tweets are that an airline is tweeting.

The most people that are following the tweets of an airline are travelers. The probably fly frequently to other countries and are always looking for a good deal on flights. The most important thing an Arline can tweet in this case are the last minute and best deals.

Just because an airline has many tweets doesn’t mean that it has a good reputation with its customers. I just think that airlines could find better information to distribute to those that listen rather than “trending information.”
