European city guide specialist Spotted by Locals has released an offline iPhone application so consumers can browse maps and find points of interest nearby via GPS.
The free app offers travellers the latest tips from locals as well as the ability to save favourites without the need to go online.
A study released in October revealed two-thirds of consumers blame high roaming charges for not using their mobile phones while on holiday.
Here’s a clip of the Spotted by Locals app:
Any new and updated tips can be downloaded once travellers go online.
Spotted by Locals city guides can also be downloaded from within the app at a cost of £2.49.

Great idea and more of this is needed for mobile travel apps. The World Nomads ‘Ask a Nomad’ app (powered by Travellr.com) also has an offline feature as well.
What other travel apps have offline features? I would be interested to know.
Hey Ian,
mTrip apps are also 100% offline. There are offline maps, step by step directions by foot or subway, augmented reality, a directory with detailed descriptions and photos, an automatic trip planner, various sharing features and more!

Hi Ian,
The ‘Experience WA’ App for iPhone and Android also has offline use. You can browse thousands of places to see, explore, eat, drink or stay at your fingertips – in Perth and around Western Australia.
As well as helping with high roaming charges, we wanted to ensure full access anywhere in Western Australia, where internet coverage is sometimes sparce.
Cheers,
Sarah – Tourism Western Australia
Hi Ian,
all features of the tripwolf travel app for iphone also works offline. We include offline maps, texts and photos. The Augmented Reality viewer also works offline..
Offline travel apps is definitely the way to go! – especially since I’m guessing it will take Santa a while to make our wish for free wifi around the world come true…
