Wow – an application that turns video into live augmented reality [VIDEO]

Every now and again a new thing comes along that is extremely clever, makes people scratch their heads a bit, and inevitably has lots of applications to travel.

Step forward Condition One, a new digital service which has captured a fair amount of attention this week following its official unveiling and announcement of launch partners (Guardian, Mercedes, Discovery).

The US-based company creates 180-degree (suspect it’ll move to 360 at some point) videos which are then controlled by the user in every kind of way.

By controlled, this isn’t just stop, play, pause, fast-forward, etc. The videos, when viewed on an iPad, can be viewed in augmented reality mode – meaning when the user effectively watches the video and controls the camera angle and movement.

It is far easier to watch a clip (excuse the founders talking about how amazing it is) or download the demo for the iPad.

Gonna be much harder to hide that crappy 15 metre pool now. However if your hotel is BOSS you’re a winner…

Definitely cool to add to any travel guide.
Probably need to start emailing those guys.

  3. Longtime user of Condition One. For travel companies, a dedicated app is definitely the best user experience. It’s really not designed for 360 degree panos, but it delivers a wonderful ‘almost live’ experience that feels like you’re actually there. I think it would be terrific for wedding and meeting planners.

  4. That is just brilliant. I can imagine the excitement it would create for potential travelers considering an African safari for example.

A gimmick, but a winner gimmick that could stand out from the crowds.

There is an iPhone app called TourWrist that does this in 360, but for still photos only at the moment. It is great fun, and even better it lets you create your own!
