How design students think the travel guide of the future might look

As part of an ongoing collaboration between DK and the London College of Communication, the guidebook specialist challenged design students to come up with the travel guide of the future.

Part of the brief was to consider the potential for interactivity as well as the difficulties of competing with free online content.

Interesting then that one of the winning ideas – Best Concept – was Berlin Notes, a quirky paper-based journal of a traveller’s notes and sketches based on their experiences.

Winner of Image Making and Technology combines a both print and digital feel with the Cool/Hot weather-based guide using real-time weather information to suggest specific activities while the Response to Brief category was won by 24 Hour guides which takes advantage of modern technology as well as the need to monetise content.

All three winners were awarded a ÂŁ500 bursary for their concepts with the judging panel praising all students for integrating digital media as well as demonstrating the importance of books.

This was a great idea to have a contest for this. I love the photo option and the “find friends” is so good if you connect to social networks and use proper API.
