Yes, we’ve all seen infographics telling us how social media is doing this and that to the travel industry. But sometimes a few nuggets of information are new and stand out.
This effort from Four Pillars Hotels in the UK includes some of the well know data points which have been kicking around for a few years.
But it does contain some interesting snippets, many of which illustrate the contextual influence of how social media is influencing the search and buying processes, as well as sharing habits.
Perhaps one of the most striking is one of the first items, illustrating how the volume of searches for “hotels in [city name]” have sometimes slumped by 70% over the course of the past six years.

I’m not surprised people are no longing searching for hotels in (CityName), as everything except the hotel appears. It certainly is a two speed highway now on the internet – Expedia, Booking.com etc taking all the space. Interesting statistic on inspiration from friend’s FB images. Thanks!

85% of leisure travellers use their smartphone while abroad? This seems very high considering the expensive data roaming rates most leisure travellers are unwilling to pay.
Is this stat perhaps inclusive of wifi connections? This would significantly reduce the “mobile” nature of this smartphone use.

This is a really great infographic! It shows how much social media is growing. I found another infographic that has a small part of social media on it http://www.nbrii.com/resources/infographics/nbri-infographic-5hospitalitytrends.jpg but it’s not focused all on social media like this one.
