How social media and the web slam dunked the travel industry [INFOGRAPHIC]

Easy to forget sometimes how in such a short space of time the influence of social media on purchase decisions and how travellers rely on each other for information.

While there are subtle moves to move away from the so-called wisdom of the crowds to the wisdom of friends (especially by the likes of TripAdvisor), consumers are still massively influenced by what they read elsewhere from complete strangers on the web.

Here is a decent infographic pulled together by Funsherpa:

  1. Interesting stats and love the format.

The top stat is a bit misleading – depending on the perspective of the information being reported.

There are 2 billion trips taken in the US every year (1 billion include at least one overnight) and I don’t believe that half are international arrivals, so that is a bit suspect.

If this is a global stat, then it shows that 1 billion people that are traveling globally are traveling from other countries. That I would definitely believe.

For the US here are the total expenditures, so you can see the relationship of total spend to online

    2007 $738.6b 13% intl
    2008 $772.9b 14% intl
    2009 $704.4b 13% intl
    2010 $758.7b 14% intl
    2011 $815.2b 14% intl
    2012 $841.6b 14% intl

    40% post Restaurant reviews ?

    Wow that’s huge?

Seems hard to imagine – especially as holiday makers are eating out most evenings !

If it’s true, then it hints that we’ve all got pyschology troubles ahead – instead of just enjoying in the present, we’re distancing from the ‘here and now’ to describe it and rate it and analyse it, to post online!

Or maybe the question that got that 40% answer was more dilute ‘ have you ever rated a restaurant’ – or ‘would you ever rate a restaurant’ /

  9. The survey was also on line as well as only the USA. The picture of the whole of the population is not present. Also most Americans do not leave the USA. Well presented however and useful but limited. Darren
