Orbitz launches Android app with 72-hour flash sale

Orbitz has just launched their Android app, and is using a this-weekend-only approach to promoting their latest offering.

The Android app is officially called Hotels by Orbitz for Android, and features the full selection of Orbitz hotels, including mobile-only discounts, comparison features and 3-tap secure booking.

Users will be able to find hotels nearby for same-day booking, in addition to searching for future stays. Photos, guest reviews, special offers, amenities and detail descriptions are available alongside the typical Orbitz Price Assurance.

In a press release, Orbitz president Chris Orton touts the benefits of the app:

“We are thrilled to bring the seamless experience of our new hotels app to consumers taking advantage of the expansive selection of Android devices available now and launching this holiday season. Orbitz customers are already booking more than 20 percent of hotels through mobile devices and embracing shopping on-the-go with mobile-only deals and a lightning-fast check-out.â€

Orbitz is making quite the push to promote the launch, offering 10% off select hotels across all Orbitz mobile offerings.

This is a pretty big promotion, and is likely to be fairly costly as word gets around. Nonetheless, regular Orbitz customers are likely to take advantage of this 72-hour flash sale, giving the company ample time and space to promote the new product.

By getting customers to download the app upfront to participate in the flash sale, Orbitz not only ensures a large user base but also allows it to rocket up the most-downloaded charts – very clever. Tnooz is curious to see the flash sale’s impact on Monday.
