
Is ITA Software’s airline-hosting business a deal-breaker or a deal-maker with Google?
A little less than a year after the Travel Industry Association and the CEO-based Travel Business Roundtable merged, the rebranded US Travel Association has unveiled its new website.
The website runs on an open-source LAMP platform and uses Drupal for content management.
Eric Weber, U.S. Travel’s vice president of technology, says the redesign project, which took one year from concept to rollout, was shaped in the following manner, and the formula may be useful for other companies undertaking similar tasks.
It turns out that the Delta-Northwest merger and the integration of the two airlines has a lot more twists and turns than originally envisioned.
Several publications, including the New York Times, are reporting that the two Northwest pilots, who passed up their aircraft’s scheduled landing at Minneapolis-St. Paul airport last week, say they were distracted because they had broken out their personal laptops so they could discuss Delta’s new pilot-scheduling system.
At least they weren’t texting. The Airbus A320 they were flying likely wasn’t outfitted with Wi-Fi yet.
The Times reported that Amadeus and Travelport, which operate three of the four major global distribution systems, have abandoned merger talks and will pursue separate public offerings in Madrid and London, respectively, in the interim.
Hey, the two travel distribution powerhouses, owned by private equity companies, can always get back to their wooing later, The Times reports.
Asked about the report, Travelport GDS spokeswoman Jill Brenner says: “We never comment on market rumor or speculation.”
In my decade of writing about travel distribution, perhaps there has been no greater sport than speculating about GDS mergers, but I am not buying this one.
