Worldmate platform chosen by JTB-CWT for push into Japan

Worldmate has been named as the mobile trip-planning platform of choice for the JTB-CWT joint venture in Japan.

The move is intended to pick up on some of the unmanaged part of the $65 billion spent by the Japanese on business travel every year.

CWT bought Worldmate in 2012 for a reported $20 million dollars. Worldmate competes directly with Sabre’s TripCase and Concur’s TripIt.

The deal in Japan sees two new products come to market. “Trip To Go” is aimed at business travellers who don’t have a corporate agency – think SMEs – and can be used to book hotels, car hire and insurance. Air bookings appear to be absent, although it does offer mobile check-in for selected carriers.

The other product is uninspiringly branded “B-Schedule”, but is an interesting move as it uses the Worldmate platform to provide “itinerary synchronization” for CWT-JTB’s existing clients.

Japan is the world’s third largest business travel market.

A Euromonitor study from September 2014 found that only 19% of travel is bought online (although this will grow at 18% a year over the next five years).
