Kayak acquires Brazilian travel metasearch site Mundi

As part of its ongoing growth and expansion strategy in South America, Kayak acquired the assets of Mundi, Brazil’s first online travel metasearch site.

The Priceline-owned brand says it has acquired the domain name and technology of the Brazil site.

Mundi will continue to operate as a separate brand, a short statement from Mundi said.

Brazil’s online travel market is “soaring,” according to Phocuswright, and distribution companies describe the market as healthy.

Kayak entered the Brazilian market, which is becoming increasingly competitive, in May 2014.

The Priceline-owned metasearch player also just closed its acquisition of Europe-based price comparison company Momondo.

Priceline announced it was acquiring Momondo in early February in a $550 million deal.

The metasearch concept has been gaining momentum in Brazil with Kayak and Skyscanner entering the large Latin-America market in recent years.

Kayak will now operate the Kayak, Momondo and Mundi brands in Brazil.

A statement from Kayak says:

“We are excited to add Mundi to our portfolio of global brands. Mundi pioneered online travel search in Brazil and has developed a loyal user base.  By combining Mundi’s brand equity with Kayak technology we will be able to reach even more travellers in the market.”
