History of the Internet (and a few travel milestones) [INFOGRAPHIC]

A couple of things standout in this AVG infographic, some perhaps more obvious than others.

It reminds us, for example, of useful/useless (you decide) facts such as there are now more than 2.4bn users of the internet (1bn in 2005) and the number of viruses that have marred its progress along the way.

It also demonstrates that although the likes of Google (1998), Facebook (2004), YouTube (2005) and Twitter (2006) are the perceived giants of today, they’re still pretty young companies and there has been a bit of debate recently (and here) about whether they’ll even be around in say, 10 years time.

Anyway, you can draw your own conclusions from all this.

We also thought we’d add a few online travel milestones (feel free to add more in comments):

1995 – launch of Easyjet

1996 – Microsoft launches Expedia

1996 – Sabre launches Travelocity

1998 – lastminute.com, Priceline launched

2000 – launch of TripAdvisor

2001- launch of Orbitz

2004 – Expedia acquires Tripadvisor for $210m

2005 – Priceline acquires booking.com for $135m

2008 – launch of Airbnb

2010- Google acquires ITA Software for $700m

2012- Hotel giants launch RoomKey

2012 – Priceline to acquire Kayak $1.8bn

    Thx Jake,

I think under 1991 – it says Tim Lee of CERN introduces the WWW, no?

No mention of Tim Berners-Lee in this infographic! Major omission in repect of the true origins of the internet?
