What happens in Las Vegas is now virtual

Las Vegas is the latest travel company to let travellers have a taste of a destination or experience via virtual reality before they go.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has released an application providing travellers with a glimpse of what happens in Vegas.

The Virtual Reality Companion app, available for both Apple and Android devices, offers 12 Las Vegas clips that can be viewed on a smartphone or using a virtual reality device such as Google Cardboard or Oculus.

The LVCVA is in good company with its virtual reality experiences with others unveiling their own concepts recently including Virgin Atlantic, hotels group GCH and Marriott.

Many are already predicting big things for virtual reality this year and especially in destination marketing.

At a Travel Technology Initiative session on user experience in London this week, Visualise head of virtual reality, Will McMaster, predicted the technology would be in every home in 10 years time.

“All these technologies are forming what is going to be the next computing platform. Virtual reality give people something that not other medium can give. It allows people to feel like they are somewhere else which is what the travel industry is selling.”

He went as far as to say that virtual reality could make buying travel through traditional means obsolete.

Visualise has worked extensively with Thomas Cook on virtual reality experiences including the tour operators ‘Try before you fly’ campaign.

McMaster also says he’d like to see more travel companies using virtual reality to tell stories with someone leading people around a destination or experience.

He pointed to Boeing which has an Immersive Development Center for engineers to get virtual access to its products.

“I think there will be a virtual reality headset in every house in the next decade because of the big push from all the big companies and consumers will respond because if it’s done right it is an amazing experience.”
