TourRadar unveils mobile chat app for group tours

TourRadar, an online tours and activities provider, describes its “Meet Others” mobile application as Whats App for the group tours industry.

The service enables users to sign in, via Facebook, TourRadar profile or Google+, and get involved in ‘Meets’ (conversations) with those on their specific tour.

The mobile app aims to build excitement around forthcoming tours, break the ice and enable fellow travellers to share tips on anything from flight options to what to pack.

It’s also handy for people thinking of booking a tour to draw on the wisdom of those who have already signed up.

TourRadar (TLabs here) initially launched the “Meet Others” app on Facebook two years ago and developed similar white-label services for a number of adventure travel companies.

Now with the huge amount of messaging going across mobile devices, the company felt it was time for a branded mobile app.

The app is available to download from iTunes while a version for Android devices and a responsive website are also in the pipeline.

Hi Alexandra, thanks for your comment. As we’ve had more than 60,000 messages shared across our platform over the past 2 years we’ve worked closely with tour operators using the platform to ensure that spam, flaming, etc has been keep to an absolute minimum through internal checks/controls. Naturally as the service grows in popularity and more people use it, we’ll continue to ensure that like it is now, the system only adds value to the tour operators’ business not hurt it.

I wonder what controls do they have in place (if any) around these Meets. One tour operator we spoke with dismissed this feature when we suggested it as “one more place I have to moderate.” She was worried that people might use the messaging system in ways that would hurt or devalue her business and I wonder if others have similar concerns.
