What happens in a minute on the web? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Just how much activity takes place on the internet these days, whether it’s social media, number of new mobile users, new viruses or the number of apps downloaded?

At the centre of it all is data – lots of it. In fact, some estimates reckon some 640,000 GB of data is transferred around the globe via the web every 60 seconds.

But where does that data go? And what is it being used for?

The folk at IT hardware manufacturer Intel have tried to work, putting together this eye-watering chart to illustrate exactly what goes on in a single minute on the web.

It just goes to show how much we have come to use the net for social sharing – and how almost all businesses must now adapt to that shift. It’s so important for every business (even small ones, run by people who aren’t the most net-savvy) to establish an online presence, have social media integration, and know how to leverage and promote their business through it.

It’s even more important for those in the travel and leisure industry. Why? Not only do they sell an experience (and people LOVE sharing their experiences through social networks), but that’s where their customers are, and how their customers will gather information on what they’re going to spend their money on (from asking friends, researching reviews, watching videos, etc.)

We recently wrote a guest article on tnooz about how tour and activity operators should use social media:

The analysis highlights the staggering power of the internet but as important the need for context in goal-setting and decision-making (i.e., you need to be able to see the full ecosystem)
